The German Shepherd breed was created from herd and farm dogs in or about 1899 in Karlsruhe Germany, and introduced into the U.S.A in 1907.
Rin Tin Tin, famous German Shepherd of the silver screen had his meager beginnings. Rin Tin Tin was rescued by Corporal Lee Duncan in 1918 when Lee had his battalion look for survivors in a bombed out war dog kennel in Lorraine, France. Rin Tin Tin, his mother, and litter mates were the only survivors. His fantastic journey to the silver screen helped boost the breeds popularity in America today.
